Modern Shanty

Music aboard ship has long history.  Commander Chris Hadfield of Canada has taken it to new level however,  with the first music video made in space by playing guitar and singing David Bowie's "Space Oddity" aboard the International Space Station.

He returns to earth today along with US Astronaut Tom Marshburn and Russian Cosmonaut Roman Romanenko.

Until next, sweet sailing.

Oh gosh, I finally watched this last night when the Washington Post had a piece about him on their home page.

It's fantastic. But I made a terrible mistake - I followed a link they gave to Cmdr. Hadfield wringing out a washcloth in space.

And it turns out that there are a whole STRING of similar videos. I was up watching them until 2 a.m.! To steal from my latest Facebook status:

"Astronauts, they're just like us. They make peanut butter sandwiches! They mop up spills! They cry! They sleep! They get colds! They show off the space latrine! Oh, wait, most of us never get to show off the space latrine. But you get the idea."

Thanks for all the links Bonnie. I can relate to getting hooked on watching the ISS videos.

Here's one I like - a tour of the ISS by then station commander Sunita Williams when she was about to come back last November:

Oh, yes, she's the one I was talking about when I said "They show off the space latrine!"

I loved her tour.

If there were words in my every-night dreams, they would be these words:

It's time to guide the capture if you dare....
I'm floating in a most peculiar way ....
I'm feeling very still....
And before too long I know it's time to go ....

Well Doc, I sure hope it isn't time for either of us to go for a long while yet...
